Maori Language Week

Last week it was our Maori language week, and to celebrate it, we ll had a go at making Maori arts and craft and preparing a hangi. I made Maori bread with Fin from our class.

After we had made the bread, and put it in the oven, I had a go making a flower from weaving flax. Mine was Okay, but it had gaps in several places. After making my flower, it was time to get our bread out of the oven and start slicing the bread. We had to be careful, as cutting the bread too forcefully, as it will stick together and become dough like again. This was hard, but as we got the hang of it, a teacher took over because she reckoned we were cutting too slow. Now it was time for the hangi and we had to bring the plates of bread over, and wait for the hangi to start. Hangis are a lot different to english dinners, as you don’t serve yourself, you serve other people. The hangi was tasty as I had three peices of pork, and two slices of Maori bread

After lunch I had a go at making a carving. Unfortunately, I made a bad attempt and I had to big dips in my carving, and I tries a different, but I think easier way. Instead of using a wooden hammer to hit the carving tool in the wood, I used the carving tool like a pencil. When people saw doing this they laughed at my idea. Eventually, I went back to the normal method and I started to get the hang of it, but before too long, I made lots of holes, and it was impossible to carve with all the holes in my carving, so I had to chuck my carving in the bin. By the end of this, it was the end of the day. Thanks to all the teachers who made this day possible. it was most enjoyable.

Week 7 Term 3

What a week. For maths, we have learned about quadrilaterals. I have learned that a quadrilateral has 360 degrees, and they can be made out of two triangles. They have four sides, and are normally either a square, rectangle, kite, trapezium, parallelogram or a rhombus. We had to find the unknown angles using our knowledge about quadrilaterals. For english, We have been practicing showing not telling. We have been practicing this for about two weeks and I am slowly getting better at it but I think that I might need a little bit more.

Week 6 Term 3

This week has been busy. On Monday, we found out that we had won cross-country for the eighth or ninth time in a row. what a record. For maths, we have started working on geometry, I am in the top group for geometry. We have been learning about finding the unknown and angles and finding exterior angles. Picture an equilateral triangle for instants, the only difference is that on one of the corners there is straight line that keeps going after the point. In the inside of the triangle, there is letters by all of the points. a, b, c. If the line continues, past corner c, you add angle a and angle b. the answer is 120 degrees. For finding the unkwowns, we have learned that in cross angles, the vertically opposite are both the same angles. For english, we have been learning about show not tell. So instead of the was tiny, damp and uncared for, it would be. As he entered the room from the hallway the first thing he noticed was the frusty smell: a combination of mould and cigarette smoke, there were snail trails across the worn, brown, cord carpet that covered what little floor space there was. Opposite the doorway, pushedup against the wall, was a single bed, covered with a duvet but no duvet cover and a flat tobacco stained pillow.

Wearable Arts

Our main focus for the first 4 weeks of term 3 was Wearable arts. Wearable arts is where you have to make a garment out of recycled clothes. There were 8 catagories that we could enter. They were, black and white(every thing had to be black and white, not grey) Cultural(make a garment that represents a countries culture) Cartoon character(make a mask that is a cartoon character) Down on the farm(using materials that are from down on the farm, make a garment that repesents agriculture) Night Out(make a garment that is suitable for the year 8 ball) Sport(make a garment that can be worn by New Zealand athletes to the opening ceremony of the commonwealth games) Me and Me friend Connor made a garment in the cultural section. We did the Spanish culture and made a Matador(bullfighter) This our end product

Our garment made it into the semi finals and then the finals. from there, we came third place in the cultural section

Term 3 Goals

My goal for Cross Country is to get in the top ten. I will achieve this by sticking to my plan in training and going hard on the actual day.

My main goal is to stay focussed in class as I often get distracted, I will achieve this by not talking unless it is work related.

My goal for English is improve on my reading comprehension, I Will achieve this by staying focussed while Iread at home

My goal for Maths is to get better at geometry as I fell this is the weak point in my maths.

For the last term, We have been doing a science project. My topic was what effect does gravity have on the falling speed of balls. My research that I looked up showed that a heavier ball would fall faster. For my test, I used a video camera to video the results. The balls I used were a tennis ball(50g) a beach soccer (270g) a soccer ball(380g) a basket ball(450g) and a medicine ball(5kg) . In my testing it showed that I was wrong and all balls fell the at the same rate. One site told me why this happened. Gravity has more pull on a heavier object but, it takes more gravity for the ball to accelerate. These two factors cancel each other out. From this science fair, I learned how to set up a science fair and what order to put the writing. I also learned that gravity has the same effect on all balls when they fall. Over all I am happy with my science fair. Next time, I’d like to get done earlier.

Week 6 Term 2

This week has been busy. In english, we have been learning how to write reports using notes that we write down using information from a report. I have also learned what a topic sentence is and that we need to put one in every paragraph when I am writing a report. A topic sentence is a sentence that you write in every paragraph in report writing. It basically tells you what the paragraph is about. In maths we are learning how to convert fractions to percentages. If we get a hard questions such as 4/9. we have to divide 4 by 9. since you can’t make it a whole number, you have to divide 9 by 40. this is 4 with 4 remainder. now you multiply the remainder by ten and divide it again. because you’ll always get 4 remainder 4 for this particular question, you put a -over the last number to show it’s reaccurring. In tech arts we are doing fabric. Our task is to make a sweatshirt. So far, I have done the colar and the shoulders. I am starting on the pocket now.My colours are black and yellow.

Week 5 Term 2

What a week. For english, we have learned how to punctuate properly when two or more people are talking. I learned that when a new speaker talks, you put it on a new line. I still need to know when to put a comma or a full stop after some one finishes talking. For maths, I have learned how to multiply and divide fractions. When you multiply 2/3 x 5/6 You multiply straight across so you end up like this. 10/18 which is 5/9. When you divide 5/6 divided by 2/3. You flip the last fraction the other way round and make it a multiplying operation. now it is 5/6 x 3/2 which equals 15/12 or 1 and 1/4.

Week 4 Term 2

This week has been busy. I have been to the Totara springs music camp and I have learned how to play hot cross bun, band on parade, band room boogie power rock and Geronimo. I have also learned how to play the F and G chords. I also have learned how to write a haiku poem. I am writing about getting lost in mercury bay. In tech arts this week we are planning to make our jersey, I have kind of thought of the colours mine will be.

Week 8 Term 1

What a week. This week I have learned the differences between 6/8 time and 3/4 time. thew difference being 6/8 time is a lot faster. I al;so learned what Irish dancing is. In maths I have learned about factoriols and standard notification. For factoriols, 5! is 5x4x3x2x1 which is 120. Standard notifacaation is like 1.432 x10to the power of 3 is 1432 as the the bigger the power is the more numbers there are in normal math. My goal next week is to complete all my english work as it is due by the end of the term. ( week 9 is the end of the term.
